I was trying to get on this server with my friend and it wouldnt let us on, then we tryed to go on other servers but they wouldnt work either. WHY????

same. keep on timing out on Bacs (blue and codmaster999's server) and cfew.
also, are you receiving a too long of a string? usually that is caused by using 1.2.4 on 1.2.5 servers...

no, i think that minecraft.net can send a special "code" to prevent people from getting onto servers... maybe its 1.3 update????

Silly people, the login servers are down. Notch says the web guys are working on it, so don't worry your pretty little heads about it. =P

The servers can go down for any reason, it's not limited just to a hack. It actually goes down a lot when the servers go under a lot of strain, or have been up for a while. Just wait patiently, it'll be back up again sometime.
