Hey, I've been thinking about this myself for a little while, and hearing more and more players that there should be a new desert world, solely since the current one has already been run dry. I like this idea, but at the same time I don't like the idea of a new one replacing the current desert world, because of builds etc. Some players have suggested just restoring/ re-generating the lower half, but again, my own incredibly long term project in the desert goes all the way to bedrock, and I know for a fact there are a few other builds that stretch pretty deep as well...
My proposal for this is a new, signifigantly smaller desert world, purely for "Treasure Hunts". I know we already have many worlds now, but I still think this could bring a new interesting, fun, and "dangerous" experience to the server (just like when the desert first opened :3)
My ideas for it are that it should practically just be like the desert world we have now, but with some key differences:
-Like I already said, solely for treasure hunting, so no buildings whatsoever... the top layer would be zoned to stop buildings, but also to make it impossible for players to simply mine down into the tombs.
-The map itself could be smaller, firstly so it doesn't take up any more server resources than needed, but also it'd make it more of a frantic rush to grab all the treasure around before it runs out.
-The map would be wiped and regenerated every so often so that when it does start to run dry, the whole rush can start over again! This could be every 2 months, or a lot longer (up to fishy if it goes ahead... knowing how busy he is already, wouldn't want to put too much pressure on keeping a strict schedule for it... since it's probably also time consuming to do so... =P)
-This one is more optional... but like other worlds, it could have it's own rank system of sorts... The main reason for this is because knowing how there are quite a lot of superops, it would be tempting for at least some to start abusing their super special mining equipment... or generally try to bypass the top layer zone to mine into the tombs below, and generally remove any sort of fairness or challenge... I'd say just like adventure world, the rank titles could be something like "TreasureHunter"/ "TreasureWorld", or just "TH" (with appropriate ranks for OPs in case they need to kick or ban a player...).
-As far as danger is concerned, damage would be on, with the same tnt, cactus and pitfall traps, but player could warp out to deposit any finds... It is meant to be a fun challenge, but it can be frustrating getting lost or losing more than you gained to begin with... So I think warping out would be fair. On the other hand, no /home setting, and no using /back to get into the "Treasure Hunt" (coining that as the world name... :3). If they want back in, they have to start from sqaure one again. :3 Don't know if it's possible to stop players using /back to get into a different world... but my idea is apart from the portal, warping should only be a 1 way trip out of there.
Wow... I ended up writing a lot more than I intended... especially considering I'm feeling pretty rough right now, lol.
Okay, to sum up in a "too long; didn't read" manner... My main intentions behind this idea are kinda for an organised event... where players could anticipate when the world would be opened, to start a new hunt for treasure... It'd be fun, and would have the same rewards and dangers as when the desert world was first introduced. It'd also give new players who would have missed it the first time, a chance to experience a new hunt for treasure at least once, if not several times.
Edit- Technically, I could also make the portal really quickly and easily in the same place as the original desert world portal, since all it would take is to finish one of the other chambers lower in the tomb (yeah... the portal building was never actually fully built... =P).
Not only that... I could make a little challenge just to enter the treasure hunt world, which could be changed after each time the world is regenerated...
