Hello all,
This thread is in response to an older thread's tangent about the proposed server shop: a shop with infinite inventory and high prices. Below is my original response. If you want to see what else I and some other said on the topic, read the "shop ranks" thread under suggestions at around page 4.
"I'm in favor of the "Server Shop" for a couple reasons.
First off, it'll actually give value to the in-game currency. What I mean is that if all the user-operated shops were to close down or be out of stock (which isn't too inconceivable), what good would all the money be? With an infinite supply of goods, the Server Shop will ensure that in-game money can be used for something.
Next, the Server Shop would create a sort of MSRP for products. At the moment, it is difficult to decide whether or price in a shop is high or low. For instance, cobblestone in my shop costs 1.99 for a stack, or 64 blocks. At another (unnamed) shop, 10 BLOCKS of cobblestone costs 2 dollars! Is my cobblestone super cheap or is the other shop's really expensive? With a price point set by the server, fewer people will have to overpay for goods and shop owners won't be sold short.
If I think of any other points, I'll post them up. Right now, I'm getting a little too tired to think.
Edit: Now I'm generally a politically conservative person, but I DO see value of stimulating an economy (like ours). The theory is as follows: if people spend money, then businesses flourish causing the businesses to spend money causing more people to spend money. The money keeps going around in a circle... sort of. Where am I going with this?? I DON'T think that any sort of money ranking should be posted. Like with any ranking, people will try to move up in it. As a result, people will spend less to conserve money thus causing a bottleneck in the flow of money.... in a nutshell, I think such a ranking would KILL the economy system. If anything, people should be somehow encouraged to spend their money... but who am I to talk? I've been hoarding my 13k+ hahaha. But for real, I DO spend quite a lot of in-game money at other shops.
Yet another edit: Aeon, if you are really interested in fixing the economy system, I think it'd be a good idea to somehow promote the shoplist. This does NOT mean ranking the shops by money. I think categorizing the shoplist by stock level was an ok idea btw. Back to the topic: if the shoplist can be promoted via broadcast automatically (say every few minutes), fewer people will have to scramble around looking or asking for a shop.
Side note: I think the shoplist needs a rather hefty facelift . The spawn and all the portals (like AW and PVP) are very nice while the shoplist is simply a wooden box -_-"
